Description

Introduction

The Type-052 is a class of destroyers of Chinese origin. These ships represent a radical design change from the earlier Soviet style ships using obsolete equipment. Two ships were built.

Layout

The Type-052 is the first Chinese destroyer built to modern Western standards. In China these are the first class of destroyers with gas turbine propulsion and the first type of ships to receive a central combat data system. For many years the Type-052 served as a test bed for integrating various, mostly foreign, naval components. Only after years of upgrades and refits these are now deemed operational warships.

Mobility

The Type-052 are the first gas turbine powered destroyers in Chinese service. The Type-052 uses a CODOG arrangement. Two MTU diesel engines are used to travel economic speeds. Two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines are used in combat. Reports of Ukrainian gas turbines fitted in the second ships appear to be incorrect. Maximum speed is 31 knots using gas power. The range is 5.000 nm at 15 knots using diesel power.

Users

The Type-052 was built for the PLA Navy. Two ships were produced and are still in service. In 2004 and 2011 extensive refits took place, with various upgrades in between.

Subcomponents

Before refit

1x2 100mm Type 79A dual purpose gun on bow. Can be recognized by the rounded turret housing.
1x8 HHQ-7 SAM system, plus 16 spare missiles.
2x4 YJ-8A subsonic anti-ship missiles amidships. These are the folding wing variant launched from smaller box launchers than the original YJ-8.
4x2 37mm Type 76A. Serves as dual purpose gun and close-in weapon system.
2x12 Type 75 ASW rocket launcher.
Yu-7 lightweight torpedo in 2x3 Type 7424 torpedo tubes.
2x Z-9C naval helicopter. Hangar facilities for two helicopters, landing deck for a single helicopter.

After refit (2004 and 2011)

1x2 100mm H/PJ33B on bow. The H/PJ33B is a refit of the earlier Type 79A with a more stealthy turret housing.
1x8 HHQ-7 SAM system, plus 16 spare missiles. Reportedly improved to a newer standard.
4x4 YJ-83 subsonic anti-ship missiles amidships. These replaced the earlier YJ-8A. Therefore the Type-052 carries twice the number of anti-ship missiles, each having a three times longer range than before.
2x 30mm Type 730 close-in weapon system. Located on either side of hangar. These replaced the four twin gun 37mm Type 76A turrets.
2x6 Type 87 ASW rocket launcher. These longer range systems replaced the earlier Type 75.
Yu-7 lightweight torpedo in 2x3 Type 7424 torpedo tubes.
2x Z-9C naval helicopter. Refit possibly includes support for Ka-28 as well.
